Tiwa Savage Laments Criticism Over Fashion Choices, Decries Age-Shaming

Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has expressed her frustration over the relentless backlash she endures for her fashion choices, especially due to her age.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Receipts podcast, the singer highlighted the double standards she faces compared to global stars.

She cited Beyoncé, who is also in her 40s and often celebrated for her beauty and confidence in wearing bikinis, while she continues to face criticism and age-shaming from Nigerians.

“They age-shame me every single day. They say, a woman of you age, how can you be wearing a bikini? I can because I have a body”, she said.

Tiwa Savage emphasised the double standards, stating, “Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis but Americans don’t age shame her. They would be like, for her age, black don’t crack. It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.

“But they [Nigerians], always throw these things like, when her son grows up, he’s going to see this. My son is going to be like, my mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.”
