Please tell us a little bit about your background.
I am Emmanuel Yila Umaru, i hold an intercalated degree in Human Anatomy and currently pursuing an MB;BS. I’ve also completed various certificate courses, including the Youth Development Center (EDC) program at Pan Atlantic University, Lagos Business School, enhancing his skills in leadership and community development.
I come from a family of entrepreneurs; my parents are innovators in their respective fields. My father, a trained veterinarian, founded a company over two decades ago focused on agricultural solutions, particularly in the livestock sector. My mother ventured into the beauty industry, and together, they established another family business that provides precision solutions in agriculture and healthcare. This upbringing has given me a solid entrepreneurial foundation.
What was your dream job growing up?
I had many aspirations as a child, ranging from wanting to be an astronaut to becoming an aeronautics engineer. My best friend and I were avid readers of scientific literature, which sparked my curiosity. Eventually, I chose to pursue medicine due to my passion for life sciences.
Please share with me your journey to entrepreneurship.
My interest in entrepreneurship has always been fueled by a love for innovation and the art of negotiation. Growing up, I drew inspiration from my parents’ journeys and immersed myself in books about successful startups. Participating in pitching competitions further ignited my entrepreneurial spirit. A significant milestone in my journey was being selected as a top candidate out of 40,000 applicants for the entrepreneurial management program at EDC, Lagos Business School. This experience, coupled with managing our family farms and working in our family business, helped solidify my entrepreneurial path.
What motivated you to start up Docxplorer?
The motivation behind Docxplorer stems from recognizing a gap in support for healthcare professionals. Many have the potential to drive change in organizations like WHO or the UN but lack the soft skills and networks necessary for success. A personal experience in a consultation room highlighted this need when we struggled to find a renowned pediatric surgeon specializing in cerebral palsy treatment. This incident made me realize the importance of enhancing visibility and access to resources for healthcare professionals.
Docxplorer aims to provide the tools, training, and networking opportunities necessary for them to build their skills and connect with mentors.
