“People In Some Parts Of The World Still Look Down On Us”-Wale Ojo Speaks On The Possibilities Of Nollywood Competing With Hollywood
At the recent Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, the entertainment industry basked in the glow of yet another dazzling celebration of talent and creativity.
Among the luminaries of the evening was the actor, Wale Ojo, who secured the coveted Best Actor award for his role in the movie, Breath of Life.
When asked about the moments that stood out for him at the award ceremony, Ojo recalled the unexpected joy that swept through the crowd when his co-actor in the movie, Chimezie Imo, was announced as the recipient of the Trailblazer Award. He also highlighted the elation felt by many when Breath of Life clinched multiple accolades.
Reflecting on his win in an interview with Sunday Scoop, Ojo expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is always great to be recognised by one’s peers and everyone. I felt good and we came out tops, so it was a crowning achievement.”
Highlighting his experience on the set of the award-winning movie, Ojo said, “It was great. There was great camaraderie between the actors and the crew, and everyone worked hard. It also helped that Ibadan (where the movie was shot) is my hometown, so I was able to do what I wanted to do.”
Addressing the current standards of Nollywood productions, Ojo opined, “We have an international standard, but we still have a long way to go. I would really like us to compete with Hollywood. People in some parts of the world still look down on us, and I don’t want that to happen. That is what we are aiming for at my company— New Nigeria Cinema— to add value, and compete one on one with Hollywood.”
