Cyberbullying: I Had To Take Myself Off Social Media After Ivory Coast Game – Alex Iwobi Tells Nigerian Sports Minister (Video)

Following the Super Eagles’ failure to win the cup, many Nigerians and Super Eagles fans have continued to decry the performance of the national team, especially Iwobi.

Nigerian Super Eagles player and Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi has said that he had to take himself off social media following the heated cyberbullying over his performance at the final match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the host country, Ivory Coast.

SaharaReporters on Monday reported that Super Eagles captain and Forward player, Ahmed Musa, appealed to Nigerians and football fans in the country to stop cyberbullying Iwobi over his performance at the AFCON final where Ivory Coast defeated Nigeria 2-1 on Sunday night to win the 2023 AFCON cup in Abidjan.

Following the Super Eagles’ failure to win the cup, many Nigerians and Super Eagles fans have continued to decry the performance of the national team, especially Iwobi.

But Musa in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday urged had angry Nigerians to stop cyberbullying Iwobi over his performance at the tournament.

Speaking with the Nigerian Minister of Sports and Youth Development, John Eno on Monday as the players prepared to return home, Iwobi said that he had to stay off the social media after the tournament following the cyberbullying by some Nigerians and fans.

The sports minister who however extolled Iwobi and the entire Super Eagles team said, “It is a huge improvement from the previous outcome. I’m not too sure you were in the 2013 team but since 2013 when you became part of the team, it has been about the best result. I’m aware of something that is going on on social media.”

Iwobi replied, “I had to take myself off social media.” The minister quickly asked him when he took himself out of social media and he said, “After yesterday’s game.”

The minister said that as a ministry, “It is not the first time. We are going to make another statement based on the kind of bullying, which is not just you but to everyone exposed to it as a result of the outcome of the game.

“We are very concerned about our sports men and women. When I couldn’t come to you people, I wrote a personal letter addressing Ahmed Musa and all of you, trying to advise you to forget about everything.

“Just so you know, I’m not unconcerned of what is going on. You don’t deserve that. You have been there for close to over 40 years and I know you could have as well say no. I have watched your matches and you did your best for your country.”

The minister said that “There is nothing that anybody is saying that will make you feel otherwise. I’m very proud of you and I believe that the rest of the country is. Those who are not are just in the far minority and so do not speak for me and do not speak for our country and do not speak for the leadership of our country.”

He encouraged Iwobi and other Super Eagles players to go back home and be proud with the Silver medal which according to him was won last by Nigeria in the year 2000.
