Lady Shares An Amazing Story On How She Donated Part Of Her Liver To Save Her Mum’s Life As She Was Diagnosed With Liver Cirrhosis

“When Maa was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis in 2018, her condition kept getting worse day by day. She’d be in constant pain, and would cry most of the time.

She was in her 50s; it broke my heart to see her like that.
At that point, I’d been married for 5 years and was working as a wedding photographer. I was at the peak of my career and I’d often travel for work. It wasn’t the easiest decision to make then, but I told myself, ‘I’ll donate a part of my liver.’

Maa fought with me and Dad; he was on my side. I’d just tell her, ‘Just trust me?’ My in-laws stood with me too. My husband told me, ‘If I were at your place, I’d do the same!’

And so, I did my research and reached out to past donors and recipients of liver transplants. There was a part of me that was worried about conceiving after the surgery.

But the more people I spoke to, the more my confidence rose. Trusting fate, I went ahead with the procedure…

For the surgery, we had to take care of our health; we exercised and ate healthy. And then in February 2018, the doctor said, ‘It’s time…’ I remember entering the operation theater at 7AM.

The procedure took 14 hours to complete. When I woke up again, I cried a little. Mom and I met 3 days later. But she was under the influence of her medication, she barely spoke. It took 15 days for her to understand what had actually happened.

And when she did, oh my God, we couldn’t stop crying. She kept saying, ‘What you did, no one could!’ It was emotional. And then, I moved back to Bombay with my husband. Within 6 months, I was healthy again–I began swimming and running.

Maa’s health improved too. And the best thing is that by the end of the year, I received one of the best news of my life; I was pregnant! And the moment I held my daughter, Nayanika, 9 months later, I knew what motherhood meant. And that’s how the last 5 years have gone by; in embracing motherhood and getting closer to Maa.

Everytime Maa visits us or when we go to her in Delhi, she is on her toes. Nayanika and her are inseparable; Maa’s reliving her childhood, Seeing her so healthy and happy today makes my heart overwhelmed. For I now know what unconditional love is, in all its glory!”
