A TRIBUTE TO MY LINKEDIN FAMILY❤️🙏🏽
One year ago, when I arrived in the United States on a full-ride scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in Health Communication, I made a difficult but life-changing decision – to provide resources that would assist fellow international students, especially those from the Global South to gain scholarship opportunities to study abroad for FREE.
When I commenced in August last year, many mocked me, especially on Twitter, saying: “Once they travel abroad, they become motivational speakers and travel agents.”
At some point, I felt the urge to stop, but an inner voice kept nudging me to ignore and continue. I’m neither a motivational speaker nor a travel agent. I’m just that young man with a passion for assisting others.
I come from a poor home, not “average,” not “middle class.” The type of home where everything is insufficient and a struggle. Regardless, I was determined to change that story and chose the path of academic excellence, which eventually got me rewarded.
Given my background, coming to the United States to study changed not only my life but that of my family too. I told God that I couldn’t thank Him enough and that giving back to society is the only way to keep showing gratitude.
Two weeks ago, a stranger hugged me at Heathrow Airport in London. He said he benefited from my scholarship resources and was resuming studies in the UK on scholarship. I left Heathrow for O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, USA, and someone saw me and sent me a heartwarming comment on LinkedIn. She said she saw me at the airport when she arrived in the US for her studies but couldn’t reach me because I was too far from her.
She mentioned that my resources helped her with her graduate school applications, including her visa interview. Finally got home (Iowa City) and met yet another new student who testified that she got to know about my university through me, and that I was instrumental to her fully-funded Ph.D. scholarship. All this happened in 24 hours.
These are just three of the uncountable success stories associated with what I do on LinkedIn. Then, I pause and imagine what would have happened if I had quit long ago. Never allow the words of naysayers to get to you, especially when you’re on the right course.
August 2023 made it one year of fulfilling my promise to God, and I have zero regrets. I would like to thank you all for being part of the thousands of people who support me here. I don’t call you followers; I call you family because you’re lovers of what I do.
I remain your brother in scholarship, Ugochukwu Madu, and I’m committed to seeing you win.
With love ❤️,
Ugo🦅
