From Ado-Ekiti to South Korea: A Journey of Dreams and Determination

In 2013, with just $100 and a heart filled with ambition, I set out from Ado-Ekiti on an incredible journey. It was a fully funded ride to South Korea, courtesy of the Korean Government scholarship program.

It all felt surreal, and as I woke up the next day, which happened to be a Saturday, I found myself questioning if it was all just a beautiful dream.

The idea that I had confidently flown 22 hours without informing my parents left me in awe and excitement.

With this scholarship came newfound freedom, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that my “village people” might be waiting for me to stumble and fail. Despite the initial apprehension, I eagerly attended my first language class, only to find myself struggling immensely with assimilating the intricate Korean characters. Doubt crept in, and I even contemplated exploring an offer from China, where I had received two MSc offers alongside the one from Korea.

However, in my heart, I recognized the future benefits of mastering the Korean language, and that kept me pushing forward. I took the self-study route, dedicating myself to learning beyond the classroom curriculum. Gradually, as the mandatory one-year language program came to an end, I managed to meet the minimum requirement to progress to graduate school.

Throughout this journey, one driving force sustained me – the dream that was bigger than I was at that time. Looking back today, I dare to believe that I am a step closer to that dream. Challenges and rejections may have tested me along the way, but I have learned never to give up. The sweet taste of victory is within reach, and it serves as a powerful reminder that perseverance and determination can overcome any obstacle.

So, to anyone facing challenges or rejections today, I say this with conviction: Never give up! Your victory may be closer than you think. Keep believing in your dreams and pushing forward, and one day, you’ll look back with pride, knowing you’ve come a long way. Embrace every step of the journey, for it is the path that leads you to greatness.
