Ayra Starr Shares Her First Experience Meeting Don Jazzy, Says He’s The Coolest Person Ever

Nigerian superstar Ayra Starr has in such a short amount of time quickly risen up the ranks and has become one of the most successsful Afrobeats artistes working right now. Ayra Starr has MULTIPLE big hits to her name, and the singer, now 21, doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon.

Now Ayra Starr is gracing the cover of Teen Vogue and inside the magazine dishing about some of her celebrity interactions. Ayra Starr opened up about how it was meeting Don Jazzy, and also spoke about a phone call that she had with American hip hop star, Nicki Minaj. Here is what Ayra Starr had to say.

Speaking on when she first met Don Jazzy, Ayra Starr said:

AYRA STARR: I remember the first time meeting him, I was just so shy. I would be in the studio with my brother and if he leaves the room, we look at each other and scream, ‘Oh, my God!’ But when I met him, he was the coolest person ever. He just wanted to speak to me, to understand where my mind was. He saw that I wanted it so much. There’s guidance, and I appreciate it so much because I don’t know everything. My first year recording music, Jazzy left me in the studio and he said, ‘Just make music.’ He didn’t say, ‘Make this type of music or sing about this.’ Everything was left up to me and I discovered myself. I feel like I’m still discovering my sound

Speaking about the realization that she has worked with her idols like Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, and Kelly Rowland, Ayra Starr said about it – while also casually how she was on the phone with Nicki Minaj:

AYRA STARR: I feel like I’ve not really taken everything in yet. It just feels so surreal,” Starr says. “I was on a call with Nicki Minaj…. She doesn’t understand how much I love her. I grew up listening to her. I was like, ‘You made me feel confident. Because of you, I could tell my teachers no!’

Wow! Not Ayra Starr just casually talking to Nicki Minaj on the phone – that’s a big flex. I’m very happy for Ayra and how far she has come in such a short amount of time.
