From Losing His Only Parent A Day Before His First Graduation To Obtaining A PhD In Mathematics At Age 28
Meet Dr Simo Mthethwa, at age 28 he obtained a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Kwazulu-Natal, after losing his only parent a day before his first graduation.
He was born and raised in eSabhuza village, KwesakaMthethwa, eMpangeni, KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.
He is a remarkable award-winning Mathematician, Academic, Founder and Director of Mthethwamatics, a movement that aims at creating a society that is mathematically informed.
He also holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematics, a BSc Honors in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Kwazulu-Natal.
Dr Simo Mthethwa seeks to build a tradition which is contrary to popular beliefs that mathematics is a challenging subject that has no tangible implication to how the world operates.
He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Kwazulu-Natal’s School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science.
He previously served as a TC at MiET Africa and a Mathematics Consultant at Canaan College.
“Learning does not start at school. What shapes a child is what they are exposed to and taught at home. If a home downplays education, a child is less likely to pay attention to school.”
“Maths needs constant practice. Even though there are chores, children need to be encouraged to go through their maths book and worksheets,” said Dr Simo Mthethwa.
