“I Was So Ashamed At That Time, Because I Was Mentoring Teenagers”- Former Minister Kemi Adeosun Speaks On The Impact Of The Fake NYSC Certificate
Unlike some people who prefer to remain in the eyes of the public even after leaving government office, some others choose to lead a quite live once they exit office.
A former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, belongs to the latter group.
Recall that she resigned from her position in 2018, following public pressure over her submission of a fake National Youth Service Corps certificate. Since bowed out of that exalter office, Adeosun has maintained a low profile, as she is rarely seen at political or other public functions.
While speaking at the 10th anniversary of the Uncommon Woman Conference organised by the Jesus House Church, United Kingdom, in March 2022, Adeosun stated that she was embarrassed by the incident. She said, “I was so ashamed at that time, because I was mentoring teenagers. That experience negated the lessons I had taught many teenagers. I cried every day for three months, and did nothing else.
“I thought I would feel better when I got vindicated by the court, but still, I was not happy. The court cleared my name three years later, but it took counselling and therapy before I felt better. It was after that I forged ahead with life and started my charity work.”
In 2021, the former minister launched the DashMe Foundation to render help to underprivileged people.
Soft-spoken and amiable, the 56-year-old Adeosun also has good tastes when it comes to fashion. Her outfits are usually classy and comfortable. She favours mild make-up which brightens her face.
The Ogun State indigene has also not been shy about her passion for helping people in the grassroots. On November 17, 2022, she posted a video of herself holding a big fish, and captioned it, “I am originally a ‘village girl’ from Ogun waterside. (I am) so proud to support Waterside Fisheries, a social enterprise cutting out the middlemen to give better prices to fishermen and buyers.”
Prior to that, she had visited a former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on May 1, 2022. She posted a picture of the visit and added the caption, “So honoured to visit Baba in Abeokuta (in Ogun State) today. He is filled with so much wisdom. Listening to his anecdotes is like learning in the best executive classroom.”
Revealing the inspiration behind her philanthropic activities, she said, “Over the years, I have been privilege to travel far and wide. ‘DashMe’ is about impact. It is about mobilising resources for vulnerable children, and victims of domestic abuse. It is about encouraging others to give through a noble platform and to ensure that lives are changed, one gift at a time.”
