After Losing His Only Parent At Age 7, In 2014 He Became The First Graduate In His Family, Today He Celebrates A Milestone As He Becomes PHD Holder

From losing his only parent at age 7 to obtaining a PhD in Mathematical Statistics in record time.

Meet Dr Sisa Pazi, he recently obtained a PhD in Mathematical Statistics from Nelson Mandela University.

His mother passed away when he was seven years old. He then went to live with his grandmother, who at the time had no source of income, and was taking care of five grandchildren.

“It is said that it takes a village to raise a child. I understand this quote very well as my grandmother primarily relied on alms to put food on the table.

It gives me great pleasure, however, to say that despite the difficulties, not a single day have I ever gone to bed hungry”, said Dr Sisa Pazi, who grew up in Alice in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

In 2014, Dr Pazi became the first graduate in his family, after obtaining a BSc in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (cum laude) from Nelson Mandela University.

Due to the situation at home, he had to work part-time while doing his BSc Honors in Mathematical Statistics, graduating in 2015 and in 2016 while doing his MSc in Mathematical Statistics, he was employed permanently as a Lecturer in Statistics at Nelson Mandela University.

In 2018, he registered for his PhD part-time as he was working full-time and had a family.

On 24 April 2023, Dr Sasi Pazi graduated with a PhD in Mathematical Statistics from Nelson Mandela University.
