New Couple Shares How They Adopted A Child With Down Syndrome And How It Made Them Proud Parents
“Since I was a child, I was always inquisitive about children who begged on the streets. I wondered where they came from and if they had any family.
As I grew up, I decided that I wanted to adopt a child and give them a new life.
So before I got married, I laid it out to my now husband– he was very accepting towards adopting.
After marriage, we were in the US for a while and that’s when we came across a baby girl who had Down syndrome.
After meeting her, I started researching about it. My husband and I both wondered how kids without any parents, who also have down’s syndrome would be managing.
So we decided that once we moved back to India we’d adopt a baby with Down syndrome.
Our application was accepted within two weeks!
We were then shown the children they were fostering, and when I saw Veda – it was love at first sight. Even for my husband – the moment he saw a photo of her, it took him less than a second to say, ‘When are we getting her home?’. So this little bundle of joy became a part of our family when she was all of 15 months old!
She had missed out on one and a half years of therapy. She had to work on her motor skills, had to walk with weights tied to her feet to align her toes. If she missed therapy for one day, it would break her cycle and her hard work would go in vain.
I have seen her in extreme pain during those days, struggling to do things that other children do very naturally.
Those around us didn’t make it any easier! My parents stood like rocks by our side, but his parents were far from accepting us. They openly declared that they didn’t support our decision and refused to speak to us.
Even my husband’s friends started treating us differently, but as long as Veda was happy, nothing else mattered.
So far, it’s been an amazing journey. She has been our strength and made us two proud parents.
Despite everything, she’s always so happy and loving towards the world around her. Maybe that’s something that we all should learn from her — to love and spread happiness, even when life hasn’t been fair! To be better…and never bitter!”
