A Chinese proverb says,
“Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.”
This is how I will divide “regret” into two categories.
“Regret?” You must be wondering🤔 how he could think of categorizing such a thing, lol who does that? So, here’s my thought process; just bear with me.
There are two kinds of regret, in my opinion:
The first is regret that you never pursued or attempted to achieve something you desired. Not even a shot at it, so you’ll never know what the outcome would have been; you can only imagine and that’s all there is to it; and the regret that you tried and tried at something, but you failed at it, most likely because you did something wrong or whatever.
I’d rather be in the latter than among those who end up in the former. Because it’s better that you tried because you now know the outcome isn’t just in your head, you now have more knowledge on the subject because you tried, and if you try again, you’ll be coming from experience.
Do you understand now?
Now for my quick story.
I moved from Nigeria to Oklahoma, United States, a year ago, to pursue a master’s degree in accounting with a focus on fraud and forensic examination. I left with specific objectives in mind.
· Complete the Graduate Certificate in Fraud examination with a distinction in the first year,
· Pass the CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) examination in the first year,
· Pass the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam by the second year,
· Complete my master’s degree with distinction.
So far, the results I’ve achieved today are only by the grace of God.
· I have bagged a Graduate Certificate in Fraud and Forensic Examination having 3.9/4.0
· I became a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) same period
I am now halfway through my MSc program and will soon begin taking the CPA exams.
Has it been difficult along the way? Has there been anxiety? The answer is yes.
Has there been any sleepless nights… I’m not kidding when I say there’s been a lot, and I’m sure there will be more.
Will I, however, give up? … Well, no, because, as I previously stated, I would rather “regret” that I failed in my pursuit of growth and development, but with the knowledge that I at least tried, that I gave it my best shot, and now I know the outcome, than regret that I never even tried.
I also know that as long as there is life, there will be more opportunities to try again, but this time with knowledge.
To those pursuing excellence in their careers, businesses, marriages, or whatever their hands have found to do, do it well and give it everything you’ve got, and even if it’s failing now, guess what? You can always try again, and this time you will be more successful because you are coming from a position of knowledge and experience.
