While on this subject, allow me to tell you the story of this lady, I call her Mama Wasichana. A few months ago, someone wrote to me about her situation, she has 1-year old triplets, and an 8 year old.
A single mother from Kangema, Murang’a County. She was in a terrible state, and the person who wrote to me was raising money to help her with a few things.
I had just about Ksh 5,000 to spare. I sought to speak to her, and the lady said in her words – “Sir please don’t give me money, I have two hands and I can make Uji.” She was making Ksh 400 only, but to make the 400, all her triplets at to go to day care at Ksh 50 each.
And her eldest to school with Ksh 50 for lunch and snacks. That left her with Ksh 200, and she needed to buy materials for the next day, feed her kids, pay rent, buy water, with Ksh 200.
At that point, I decided to go all out, and reached a few friends to boost ber. She sent me a list of all what she needed – Kettles, jugs, sufurias, plastic seats etc.
Long story short, the lady within two months grew her Uji business from Ksh 400 a day to Ksh 1,400. She’s fully able to meet all her bills.
Now that we are in the bottom-up era, sustainable financing is the way to go. Handout culture in Kenya won’t help anybody.
