Read his post below as shared on LinkedIn:
A Nigerian CEO from Canada reached out to me a few weeks back. I was initially surprised to get a connection invite from a high-caliber Nigerian who is well established in Canada.
After checking his profile, I accepted the request with enthusiasm, expecting a productive conversation with him. And, I didn’t hesitate to initiate the conversation.
And, yes, after our initial chat on LinkedIn, we scheduled a call. We had the call late in the evening due to our time difference. I had to stay up late to meet up the time.
During the call and due to my interest in the startup space, I gave him some strategies to grow his business(start-up) and he found them valuable. Felt like he found an ambitious student to work with. And, he was all interested in working with me.
After several deliberation, he made me the Official student Ambassador for CircleUp in Nigeria, an app that enables students network with other students in and outside the country.
A few lessons from this, don’t be overly transactional in your dealings. Solve a problem first and then pitch on how to create more structures that’ll yield results for them. The offer you give then will be irresistible.
I’m excited to share that, I’m the student Ambassador for CircleUp, a social networking app for students in Canada, Nigeria and three other countries. Canada branch launches today.
