I became a United States citizen today, and I’m in awe.
8 years ago, I moved to the United States for an undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University – Idaho, and later transferred to Boise State University because of the opportunity to design my degree in their MDS program – I loved the experience.
However, most people don’t understand the amount of work, time, and money international students put into studying abroad in the United States.
For some context, international students typically pay 2-5x more tuition than their American counterparts. They also have limited access to scholarships and loans and can only work on-campus for up to 20 hours a week.
Regardless of those hurdles, international students, their families, and communities are willing to put in the work and investment because they understand that the opportunity to obtain quality education abroad represents life-changing opportunities for the students, families, and communities.
For me, one of such life-changing opportunities was the ability to start Pay4Me App last year.
Pay4Me App provides international students and their families with affordable and fast cross-border tuition and school fee payments so students don’t lose the opportunity to study abroad or worry about getting kicked out of school and risking deportation because they were “out of status” due to late, returned, or undelivered payments.
Two weeks ago, Pay4Me App became a Techstars company in the Techstars Chicago Accelerator Powered by J.P. Morgan. The resources, investment, and training we are getting from the program will help us build a company that’d transform the lives of millions of international students worldwide.
And, I’m in awe of what the United States represents to immigrants like me.
