Lady Shares How She Got Married, Had Her Dream Job, But Suddenly She Was Hit With Blood Cancer
“I was 24 and living the perfect life; I got married recently and was working my dream job abroad.
But a few months ago, my life turned upside down. I was always exhausted, dizzy and had shortness of breath after doing the most menial tasks. And when I lost the strength to stand, I knew something was terribly wrong.
My aunt was concerned and she took me to the emergency room. And that’s when I received news that shook my world— ‘Ahuti has blood cancer.’ Those words were a punch to my gut and my family broke down on call.
I couldn’t understand my fate too; at that moment, my life came to a halt. However, the doctor gave us a ray of hope, ‘The cancer is curable but we must start the treatment immediately.’
A few days later, my mom showed up at my door– ‘I’m here for you.’ Her hug was comforting as I had to give up my job and move into the hospital. My husband became the sole breadwinner but he told me, ‘I want you to focus on recovering.’
I could feel my family members’ warmth and care through their phone calls and despite being in India, it felt as if they were right by my side.
They were always chirpy, made me laugh and it was their optimism that gave me hope.
I knew the first step I had to take towards recovering was accepting my circumstances. And so, I looked forward to my hair falling.
And when it finally did, I organized a mundan ceremony for myself in the hospital.
To show support, my family and friends decided to be on video call with me. In fact, one of my best friends also decided to shave her head with me too.
As my hair fell, I blushed as my loved ones comforted me, ‘You still look beautiful!’ Without hair, they loved me just the same and their gesture made me love the new me.
They made my mundan ceremony unforgettable!
My family’s motivation rejuvenated me to fight cancer with a smile. And that’s what I did; from being on blood thinners, getting injections daily to seeing scars appear on my body, I fought through everything to be discharged from the hospital after 22 days!
The feeling of being back home to family and friends after treatment was indescribable. I thanked my husband for being my rock; for being strong for me and taking care of our families in my absence.
And today, although I’m better, the cancer hasn’t left my body. I now need to fight harder and undergo a bone marrow transplant. My brave siblings have already given their samples to be donors for my operation; they tell me, ‘Your battle is also ours.’
As painful as it is to live with cancer, with the motivation I receive from my loved ones everyday, I know that even though cancer is winning the battle right now, together, we’ll eventually win the war!”
