Kenyan Woman Who Relocated To America As A Nurse Now Runs Multimillion Business, Meet Esther Kiiru
A few years ago, Esther Kiiru left Kenya and relocated to the United States in search of the proverbial greener pastures.
It was a change of environment that came with a number of culture shocks, among them the manner in which motorists gave respect to pedestrians and ambulances. She told Kenya Diaspora Media that this was a sharp contrast from Kenya where vehicles hardly stop to let people cross, even at zebra crossings. “I was used to dashing across the road while checking both sides of the road. I was also amazed at how cars moved away from the road to allow ambulances through.
I told myself this was the place to be,” she said. Given that she had made up her mind to settle in the foreign country, she decided to pursue nursing as it is something she had developed a passion for even before leaving home.
Kiiru is a registered nurse in California Kiiru says her love for nursing started as a young girl when she watched a program called Rescue and admired how the people were helping others in need. It was, however, not easy to get admission into nursing school in America because the waiting list is long and the entry exams are not easy.
“I am good in Mathematics but struggle with English, so it was not easy but I gave it my all and finally got enrolled into a university,” she said. In 2012, Kiiru not only graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing but also went ahead to become a registered nurse in California.
Owns homestaging company She says her motivation to be a high achiever in the US was due to the fact that she had come from a humble background in Kenya.
According to Kiiru, she did not want her child to be abroad and still continue struggling like they had done in the past. Away from nursing, Kiiru runs a company called Delight Homestaging which works in conjunction with real estate companies. “I decorate homes that are on the market for sale. I also do redesigning for people who’ve bought houses and would like to change the wall colors and such,” she explained.
Kiiru added that the business was inspired by a friend who noticed that she had a talent in redesigning every time she visited her.
