After Being Admitted To Hospital As An Asthmatic, This Experiences Motivated Her To Become A Paediatrician, Meet
Dr Nellie Balfour
Meet – Dr Nellie Balfour, South Africa’s trailblazing Medical Doctor and first private general paediatrician at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Parktown, Johannesburg.
Having lived in Australia with her family as a young child and often being admitted to hospital as an asthmatic, this experience is what motivated her to become a paediatrician.
Dr Nellie has a particular interest in newborns and early childhood development. She believes that children who are given the space to grow in a safe and nurturing society eventually grow to become well-rounded adults.
Dr Nellie obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Cape Town and went on to work at Red Cross Childrens’ Hospital in Cape Town after her internship. She then moved to Johannesburg to specialise in Paediatrics on the Wits circuit. Her Masters (which she passed with distinction) was published in the African Journal of Nephrology and was a study of acute kidney injury in critically ill, hospitalised neonates.
Dr Nellie Balfour has worked in hospitals such as Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital.
Her years in medical school and as a doctor have solidified her love for medicine and deepened her passion for helping people.
