Living with disability is stressful. Living with disability in Nigeria is double stress… Living with Spinal cord is triple stress and very expensive to maintain.
There’s more to being a spinal cord injury survivor than just being on a wheelchair. People think your inability to walk is your biggest problem as a spinal cord survivor, not knowing you deal with:
- Spasm/Spasticity
- Financial burden
- Severe back pain/ Chronic pain
- Autonomic dysreflexia
- Cardiovascular complications
- Loss of independence
- UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)
- Muscle Atrophy
-Stigma & discrimination - Swollen feet etc
And there’s risk of developing life threatening conditions like Pressure sore/ Pressure ulcer, Kidney stone or other kidney related problems, HBP etc Most of the above listed conditions with SCI are subjected to your level of injury.
As a SCI survivor, There are bad days and there are good days. No matter how hard you try to stay focus or remain positive, there are times you will feel like throwing in the towel.
During such times, hold on to God’s word and more importantly have a good support system you can lean on.
Above ALL of these, I am more than a conqueror through CHRIST who strengthens me
Note: Not all wheelchair user are spinal cord injury and not all spinal cord injury uses wheelchair.
