In 2018, I made the tough decision to stop pursuing pharmacy school to pursue my passion; design.
Even though I enjoyed working in the pharmacy, I knew I would be miserable in pharmacy school. Plus, I was in no position to pile on more student loan debt.
My passion for design comes in so many forms but the top most has always been handcrafting. So I started a side business selling hand-made items on Etsy and soon enough, Etsy wasn’t satisfying the designer in me so I decided to build my own website. I enjoyed it so much I explored it further and began freelancing.
I quit my full-time job with the most amazing health benefits I’ve ever known my entire life. I’ll be honest, my side business and freelancing didn’t bring me the income I thought they would bring. Many days I would feel regret creeping in – did I make a mistake giving up pharmacy school? I saw friends who I had started the pharmacy journey with go on to graduate and become pharmacists while I was scraping by.
But the more I designed, the more I knew that’s where my passion was. When I came across UX design, i had one of those cheesy movie moments when people finally find that thing they’ve been searching for their entire lives. I actually teared up y’all! 🙈
If someone had told me that I would be where I am today working at IBM, doing something I truly love, I wouldn’t have believed them. But now seeing how much work and sacrifice I put into myself, I am very much worth it. My journey was worth it.
So long story short, 😂 , when you discover your passion, don’t give up. No matter the trenches you go through, and no matter how long it takes, you will get there, and when you do, it will be so much more rewarding than you thought.
Happy Monday!
