Meet – Dr Peya Mushelenga, he recently graduated with his 12th university degree and 2nd Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.

He grew up in a rural village called Oshigambo in northern Namibia, where he attended primary school, studying under trees during the day and by candlelight at night. Electricity came to his village only after independence.

Despite his humble beginnings, Dr Peya Mushelenga now has 12 university degrees under his belt which include – a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Studies (University of Namibia); Baccalaureus Juris (University of Namibia); Bachelor of Arts in Economics (Open University of Tanzania); Bachelor of Education (Open University of Tanzania); Bachelor of Arts Honours in International Politics (University of South Africa); Bachelor of Laws Honours (University of Namibia); Master of Arts in International Politics (University of South Africa); Master of Laws in International Law (University of Namibia); Master of Business Administration (Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute); Doctor of Literature and Philosophy (D Litt et Phil) in International Politics (University of South Africa); and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law (University of Western Cape).

Dr Peya Mushelenga is currently Namibia’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology.

“I studied a wide range of academic fields because I believe that knowledge is limitless and the broader the knowledge the more one is in a position to work in different areas. I do not want to be restricted to one career or profession. I am not necessarily competing with anyone or want to break any record, I am simply studying for broadening my knowledge.”

“My advice to the youths are: they can learn that discipline, determination, singleness of purpose and perseverance are prerequisites for academic achievements. A person from a humble rural background, when determined can achieve excellence,” said the soft-spoken Minister Peya Mushelenga whose father was a contract labourer and mother a primary school teacher.
