Founder Of Zen Petroleum Business Now Worth $160M With Over 20 Stations, Meet William Tewiah

William Tewiah , Managing Director of Zen Petroleum, started a business in an industry he had no prior experience of, which now has annual revenues in excess of $160m.

William relocated to Ghana in 2008, following which, he started working on ZEN Petroleum in 2009 and won an initial contract supplying fuel to the Goldfields Mines in 2010.

During this time, he largely worked on his own driving up and down to the mines at Tarkwa, located in Ghana’s Western Region.

Currently, ZEN Petroleum is one of Ghana’s largest Oil Marketing Companies and supplier of fuel to Ghana’s mining sector, employing over 300 individuals.

In 2018, the ZEN brand expanded its portfolio to include the fuel retail business, starting with 20 stations with plans to double in size that was the end of 2019.

William remains responsible for strategic direction and day to day management of all Zen Petroleum operations and related activities in Ghana and other markets the company operates in.

ZEN Petroleum turned over $30m in its first year of operations, with a profit of $20,000. Since then, the company has gone on to win fuel and lubricant supply and management contracts with several mining companies in Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso.

This has made ZEN the largest supplier of fuel to Ghana’s mining sector, employing over 300 staff.

Mr. Tewiah is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK) and the Institute of Bankers (UK).

He has been involved as a director of various UK companies for many years before re-locating to Ghana in 2006.

He consulted for investment banks in London, Zurich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Singapore on banking and financial application solutions.

Some of the financial institutions he has worked for in the last 25 years include Lloyds Bank, The Bank of England, Merrill Lynch, Deutsche Börse, UBS Bank, ABN Amro, Nomura Investment Bank and Schroders.
