Today makes it exactly 12 years my mother died of Ovarian Cancer. Early in the morning, my sister called me and said, “Mummy didn’t sleep in the last 48 hours after the surgery.” I spoke to her, telling her all will be well and she should please sleep. I was so angry she hadn’t slept for 48 hours. She promised to sleep, took her shower, ate like never before since her illness and slept to never wake up again.

After her death, God gave me two mothers instead of one. Mrs. Bilikisu Olarewaju and Alhaja Modinat Coka. Alhaja had no business sticking by 5 children my mum left because she had met my mum as a colleague in PHCN, formerly called NEPA. We were nothing that time. We had nothing. Many blood relatives didn’t give us money to bury mummy.

To bury my mother, she loaned my elder brother almost N500,000. Few years later, I entered crises by marrying my wife against her father wish. She came and signed as my mother at the Registry and followed us home and prayed out her heart for us. I couldn’t even afford a proper reception. There was no ‘Asoebi’ at my wedding. The wedding reception was done with less than 20 people in my living room.

Today, I invited Alhaja for breakfast, did my usual small alert in her account, and then took her to our Ibadan office. She was close to tears. She said, “Indeed no one knows tomorrow.” She prayed so much in the office. Next week, I am bringing her to come spend time with us in our house and office at Banana Island.

In your journey, never forget those who stuck by you when you had nothing, but take more serious those who stay when you become something. Some can stay when you have nothing but many can’t when you make it.

Now, you see why I don’t judge people by race, color or religion. God used all manner of people for me in my most vulnerable state. God will use people for you, but remember not just to privately acknowledge them, do it publicly. Thank them publicly. You can forget those you helped, but never forget those who helped you. Never!!!

Alhaja Coker has a heart of gold. Thank you, ma!

I miss my sweet mother, because without her and God, I will not be here today. Rest in peace Alari!
