Chapter completed.
7 years ago when I was sat on my forklift truck, I would never have envisaged myself graduating with a law degree from one of the top universities in the world.
Whilst my path is still ongoing and I would certainly not say that I have “made it” yet, I thought the other day for the first time that I am happy with how my life is going.
I would like to say to everyone feeling trapped by their earlier decisions, who didn’t go to university straight from school, or who doubt their abilities based on historic performance or grades or social background, that there are opportunities out there and a different life is possible, despite how much the odds appear stacked against you.
I chose to study an Access to Higher Education Diploma at City of Bristol College as I was not eligible for A-Levels as a mature student. This is a 1 year, 3 days a week course that led to me being accepted into the University of Bristol Law School. I would highly recommend this pathway for anyone interested. The access course cost approximately £3,500 but you ONLY pay if you DON’T go on to higher education afterwards.
Don’t feel bad about leaving school and going into routine/manual jobs. I learnt a lot of skills in these roles, and they have kept me humble. But most of all, they gave me the determination to try harder.
Here are a few tips that I would like to share that have helped me along the way:
- visit the National Careers Service website
- go to careers fairs
- research employer websites
- look out for entry-level roles within the business that don’t require qualifications or much experience
- volunteer (I undertook 100+ hours a year while studying)
Also more and more employers are now offering alternative routes (e.g. apprenticeships) into professions that historically haven’t been accessible to individuals without a university degree i.e. solicitor, accountant etc.
I would like to thank all those who supported me in this journey. Now on to the next chapter… watch this space!
