Zimbabwean Entrepreneur Builds A Wine Brand That Reminds Africans Of Home, Now Produces 200,000 Bottles Yearly

Tinashe Nyamudoka emigrated from Zimbabwe to South Africa in 2008 with no data of the wine trade.

He labored his method up from a waiter to an award-winning sommelier earlier than founding his personal firm, Kumusha Wines. He spoke with James Torvaney about his entrepreneurial journey and wine-drinking traits in Africa.

An outline of Kumusha Wines.

I began Kumusha Wines in 2017 while I used to be head sommelier at The Check Kitchen in Cape City, and moved into the enterprise full-time in 2020. Our focus is on minimal intervention winemaking and pure fermentation, to permit the wines’ origins to return to the fore. Kumusha isn’t – but – within the enterprise of proudly owning land and rising grapes. We work with the Opstal Property within the Slanghoek Valley, run by my long-standing good friend, Attie Louw. They harvest the grapes, which we then press, ferment, and mix earlier than bottling.

We started by serving the home market in South Africa, specifically the Zimbabwean diaspora. We now produce round 200,000 bottles a 12 months and ship to quite a few worldwide markets, together with the US, Kenya, Zimbabwe, the Netherlands and, very quickly, Nigeria.
