Entering 25 with the best birthday gift ever: 6 months cancer-free.
One year ago on the eve of my 24th birthday, I was undergoing my first chemotherapy session. Last year, I wasn’t guaranteed a shot at my 25th birthday so I’m really glad to be able to share another go around the sun with all of you. When I was faced with my Stage 4 Cancer diagnosis last year I was faced with some impossible choices.
In January 2021, I had just become the President of the Jersey City Board of Education, a position that oversaw a nearly 800 million dollar budget and was tasked with reopening our schools.
Earlier that month February 2021, I had just started my second semester at Harvard Law School. Adding a cancer diagnosis on top of these two responsibilities seemed impossible – but somehow I came out the other side. Here are three things that I learned:
First, you must find your passion and hold on to it tight. Whatever your passion is, let it be something that can help others and leave the world better than you found it. For some of you, you may have already found your passion, it is the thing that lights you up inside and makes life worth living. For others, it may take a while to find that special thing that makes you tick, but believe me, the journey is worthwhile.
For me, I found that it was service to others that was my purpose here in this life.
Second, do not allow your age to be an obstacle in your journey. It doesn’t matter if you are 13, 15, 50, or 70. Age is truly a number. I say that as someone who is almost always insecure about being the youngest person in a room but I’ve come to find if you speak from the soul others will listen. While some of us may consider your age a barrier I urge you to reconsider it as an advantage.
You have experienced the world uniquely in a way that no one else ever has or ever will. Let your experiences help inform you of your path in life. Do not let anyone ever tell you that you cannot do something because you are too young or too old. We really do only live once.
