says the idea to start teaching the public about the importance of preventing cardiovascular disease by lifestyle changes and regular screening hit her.

23 years ago, I graduated from medical school.
I was full of hopes for the future and ready to help cure the world of all diseases.
Early in my practice of medicine, I realized I loved teaching, but I didn’t like the restrictions and rules of a formal academic program.
I pondered on this apparent “career contradiction” until one day, I was in the emergency room and this young lady in a wedding dress ran in, screaming and crying.
Her husband slumped during their wedding reception! The young man was 35 years old. Tests revealed he had bled into his brain (hemorrhagic stroke). He was obese and he didn’t know he was hypertensive (admitting Blood pressure was 240/120mmHg).
When he regained consciousness 5 days later, he admitted he had never done a medical checkup because he didn’t know he needed to do one!
That’s when it hit me; I can teach the public about the importance of preventing cardiovascular disease by lifestyle changes and regular screening.
Since I started doing this, I have realized I am so much more fulfilled than when I see patients in my clinic. I simply come alive when I teach, and I can talk about heart disease prevention with zero preparation, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
12 Years post Cardiology fellowship later, I am now middle aged, I can’t do all the locums I used to do when I was much younger, but I still thoroughly enjoy teaching about heart disease prevention.
What about you? Have you ever been conflicted about what is expected of you in your career and what you would rather be doing?
