Lady Who Dropped Out Of School & Became A Teenage Mother, Bags Doctorate Degree

A determined lady named Dr. Lucretia Starnes has shared the challenges she encountered in life because she became a teenage mum and this made her dropped out of school.

She didn’t relent, after working several kinds of job, she went back to school. Today she has bagged a doctorate degree.

Sharing a lengthy story on LinkedIn, she wrote:

If you’ve heard one story, you’ve heard them all, right? Wrong, because you haven’t heard ours.

Our story begins with…
I was a teenage mother who had an infant born 3 months premature, weighing 2lbs 1oz. with her lungs not fully developed. After having her, we lived from pillow to post. I dropped out of school due to embarrassment and lack of resources and childcare.

There is so much more to the story but let’s fast forward 30 years later. Let’s jump to the year of 2021. Graduate dates, not just any graduation but graduation from a Doctoral Program.

Who would have imagined that this teenage mother and daughter Dr. Anticia Alston from that pregnancy would graduate months apart with doctorate degrees.

We did that!

After experiencing homelessness, lack of resources and supports, receiving foodstamps, Medicaid and other benefits while continuing to struggle with lack of purpose and direction for a better life, I desired more.

Despite the lack of reliable transportation, adequate childcare when I worked various jobs and returned to school in my quest to pull myself up by my own boot straps, we survived.

And who would have dreamed that this day would come. In that picture, we were attending church in San Francisco. As I closed my eyes, I prayed for a better life for us. I believed in God and trusted that my situation and circumstances would not determine what me or my daughter could and would be in life. I learned to trust him then and I continue to trust Him now. He’s done it before and He can do it again.
