Girl Who Was A Bank Messenger Goes Back To School, Becomes A Banker In Same Bank

First things first. God is amazing.
So I’m on leave. Which is why I’m in a Polo shirt, jeans and Crocs.

I’m supposed to be in full relaxation mode but I figured this was also a good chance to visit some of our branches to do some transactions and say a few hellos.

It was a great pleasure seeing some of my colleagues in person. I only engage with them via email or telephone, so this was a treat. But that’s not the story.

Some years back in our old building, a tea girl was assigned to my floor. Her name was Gloria and her job was to serve tea, wash used cups, make sure those who had flasks had a steady supply of hot water, and some other things that the role of a tea girl required.

I drank (still do) a lot of tea and as a result, she was always in my office. We talked often and she would tell me about her hopes and aspirations. I remember she was extremely pleasant and so much more than her role at the time.

Life went on and she moved on (or so I thought). We lost touch as people often do when they don’t see each other for a while.

Fast forward to today. I’m sitting in the waiting area of the Lekki Branch by the Avalon House on Admiralty. Gloria recognizes me (even in my disguise) and hits me with: You are Mr. Amaechi Okobi. “Yes I am,” I replied with the eye squint and polite smile I reserve for situations in which I have no idea who I’m talking to.

She reminded me by taking down her mask, describing my old office and recalling some of our chats.
Hold on to your hat. Gloria now works in @myaccessbank as an employee. From the time I last saw her, she had ticked all the boxes and here she was – Tea girl to employee.

My mind is blown and I couldn’t be prouder of this young lady. Many hugs later, she tells me that she is a marketer responsible for recruiting customers to the Bank. Her tray had been replaced with account opening forms and an iPad.

God truly is amazing, people. Hold on to your dreams. Put in the work and leave the rest to Him. He truly works in mysterious ways.

If you are ever in her Branch and want to open an account for you or your business, ask for Gloria Ayomide – she’ll be more than happy to assist you.
