Nigerian lecturer invents hip-hop song to simplify learning mathematics

  • A Nigerian university lecturer, Dr Ishola Salami, has come up with an interesting way to make mathematics simpler and more interesting for students
  • The lecturer invented a hip-hop song for the subject so has to reduce the failure rate that has been recorded in the past years

  • Salami noted that the government needs to embrace more child-friendly strategies to make the subject easier for students to learn For a lot of students in the primary and secondary school, mathematics remains one subject that often poses as a problem, especially in situations where the subject instructor does not take active measures to come up with creative methods to teach the subject.

This is what has driven a Nigerian lecturer in the Department of Early Childhood Education, University of Ibadan, identified as Dr Ishola Salami. The lecturer made an interesting invention by composing a hip-hop song aimed at teaching mathematics to students with a simpler and easy-to-grasp approach, and reduce the disturbing failure rate that has been recorded in subject in the past years.

Salami while speaking to journalists in Ibadan, said the name of the song is Matmusic and it comprises different lyrical compositions of mathematical ideas, principles and messages, The Sun reports.

The university don who specializes in early childhood education particularly noted that the song would help students at the primary school level have a better understanding of the subject without making it cumbersome. Speaking about the disturbing failure rate that has been recorded in the subject, the lecturer noted that poor approaches that are not childhood friendly makes it hard for pupils to grasp the right formulas to use in solving math problems.

The lecturer also referenced how people who can easily solve simple math problems would be instrumental to themselves and the society. He urged the government to embrace more child-friendly approaches that would make the school subject easier for students to learn.
