2 University of Ghana graduates with no experience or science background set up chocolate factory

Two University of Ghana (UG) graduates named Kwabena Opoku Amoah and Ernest Agyekum Amponsah have set up a groundbreaking cocoa processing factory in the Anyinam in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region. According to Ghananewspage.com, Kwabena and Ernest had no experience whatsoever in chocolate manufacturing and did not do any internships or professional courses with any firms either. The two are completely self-taught as they performed their own research works to come out with their company.

The two brilliant gentlemen did not study any science or engineering related programmes either. What they have Bachelor’s degrees in are Political Science and Linguistics from the same University. In an interview, Kwabena Amoah who serves as the CEO said: “I love research and so do my partner, we have spent years researching into Cocoa as a crop and what we can do to make it more beneficial to Ghanaians and once again help Ghana gain its rightful place as the home of cocoa”

Their company is named Qualiford Ghana which produces the Y-Choco brand of chocolates which is currently available on the markets. Qualiford Ghana is legally registered and approved by both the Ghana Standards Authority and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

Describing their journey, the gentlemen made it clear that they did not come from rich homes and had to suffer to obtain finances to start the work. There was a time they had to beseech a man for GHC 1000 just to be able to produce the chocolates and display at a fair.

Almost four years after that sad episode, the young graduates with the help of a local steel manufacturer, Hammer, can boast a factory that processes raw cocoa beans into finishing products.
