President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, December 2, recounted his life as a young person and school days. A statement by President Buhari’s special adviser on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, the president said he became an orphan at a very young age. The president also said his nine-years at a boarding school and joining the Military shaped his entire life. He also said that Nigeria’s socio-economic and political salvation will come from education. Reacting to the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Community Secondary School, Daura, where he was honoured, President Buhari called on Nigerians to embrace learning as a way of life while the government will do its best to provide access.

“I spent nine years in the boarding school where the teachers showered us with love, care and total commitment. They treated you as their own children. They commended you when you did well, and flogged you on bare buttocks if you misbehaved,” President Buhari said. He also commended the school’s management – now renamed Pilot Secondary School, Daura, for maintaining high standards while admonishing the old boys association to carry on the good work they were doing.
