Karen Bass, an American lawmaker, has expressed concern over the continued detention of Omoyele Sowore, the co-convener of the RevolutionNow protest, by the Department of State Service (DSS).

Legit.ng reports that Sowore was arrested on Saturday, August 3, ahead of the Revolution Now protest which was planned to hold nationwide. He was later arraigned on seven-count charges of treasonable felony and other related offences.

Sowore has, however, been granted bail but remained in the custody of the DSS as he has yet to fulfill the terms and conditions. “Mr Sowore has the right to exercise freedom of expression and protest for change in a peaceful manner; he also has the right to peacefully assemble and voice opposition to the government,” Bass said in a statement released on Monday, October 21. Karen Ruth Bass is an American lawmaker representing California’s 37th congressional district since 2013.

The US lawmaker added that the continued detention of Sowore is a violation of human rights just as he called on the African Union and the United Nations to secure his release immediately.
