Nigerian-British Poet Theresa Lola in collaboration with the Save the Children’s girl champion, Maryam Ahmed, is helping children victims of internal displacement find meaning in life.

Though born in Nigeria, Lola moved to the UK at age 13. According to the Save the Children’s website, she said it is important to discuss issues that affect young women, adding that poetry is a tool that could be used to achieve that.

During the workshop, twelve girls between the ages of seven and 14 worked on different poems as an individual and as a group. In their engagement with the poems, they employed literary techniques like metaphors, personification to identify gender inequality, education, conflicts, among several others. During the workshop, the kids were given poems to work on as a group and individual. It should be noted that insurgency has ravaged some part of the northeast, displacing many, and putting children at the margin, making them the worst-hit victim.
